The January Sky

Wrote this down at the SPBGMA bluegrass convention in Nashville in early February of '05. The whole song came out of the lonesome feeling I get looking at those high, thin winter clouds.

The clouds are spread high cross the January sky
Stretched thin as my soul these days
The shiver I feel down my spine like cold steel
Chills me worse than the worst winter's day

Have I loved you only to lose you
Have we made such a wreck of our lives
Our promise of old, to have and to hold
Grows as cold as the January sky

I hoped that we'd find our way back but this time
Was worse than our usual fight
Now I just found your note in my old overcoat
When I came out walking tonight

Have I loved you only to lose you
Have we made such a wreck of our lives
Our promise of old, to have and hold
Grows cold as the January sky

So I'll lay me on down on this cold, cold ground
I married you darling for life
Let the wind and the snow kill the pain and fly my soul
Up into the January sky

Have I loved you only to lose you
Have we made such a wreck of our lives
Our promise of old, to have and to hold
Grows as cold as the January sky
