I've made the drive countless times from Chicago to Kentucky. You have to go past Gary, the steel mills, the oil refineries, an area you smell for miles before hitting that industrial moonscape.

There's a wall of stink outside the city
It's hot in here but it's worse out there
So roll your windows good and tight
No more fresh air till Rennselaer
Flagging behind like love left at the station
As the train is pulling you away
Fishermen catch their suppers on the slough
In the last pink light of day
(Silver Dagger theme)
Return leg home long after dark
The holes of hell belch fire and smoke
Out of steel mill stacks over still lakes
The stench settles in with every stroke
You gaze out on the price you pay
A cesspool for a Magnificent Mile
They don't seem to know, though, here at ground zero
The local drive-in is packed tonight
(Silver Dagger theme)
Silver Dagger excerpt:
My daddy is a handsome devil
He wears a chain five miles long
And on every link a heart does dangle
Of another maid he's loved and wronged
