This song came one night after reading an overview of Hindu cosmology. It was so unrelentingly clear about the smallness of our efforts in the face of the power of gods and the sheer scope of time. Being a thoroughly indoctrinated American, I kept waiting for the message of hope, but at least in this version there wasn't one.

In the beginning there was light And light shone all around In the beginning there was night And darkness did abound In the beginning there was mud And mud grew into flesh And sucked in air and light and dark With every quickening breath How did we come to such little ways Hack up our past and live out our days So far, so far away, so far from Heaven And the light within can lie to you And sing you of false glories And turn your hand against the world In hopes of making history And the night within's a liar, too A lover whisp'ring ghost stories While the mud says go and take what's yours A body can't live on mystery How did we come to such little ways Hack up our past and live out our days So far, so far away, so far from Heaven And every pulse to get ahead Will see to it you lose And every wish to rise above Will make a fool of you And fall not into resignation You'll wait in vain for aid There is only mud and light and dark Till the end of all our days How did we come to such little ways Hack up our past and live out our days So far, so far away, so far from Heaven |
