So Far On The Outside
If you asked me who my biggest influences are, I might not name Merle Haggard. Yet I have a few songs I call "Girl Merle" songs, where it's his voice I hear clear as a bell in my head as I sing them. This one is the Girl Merlest.
Strip away longing from love, burn it down, or tear it apart
What remains when the pain is all cleared are the deepest veins of the heart
Few know me better than you, I know every shade in your eyes
Who else could hurt me so easily all these years after our love has died

I never dreamed I could be so far on the outside with you
Out past the reach of the heart and the soul
Out where all hope is all through
Some stranger you meet'll have more of a chance than I do
I never dreamed I could be so far on the outside with you

The heart has a way all its own, quick to love but quick to mistrust
Years of love built stone by stone crumbling into distance and dust
A foundation still stands in search of some structure to hold
A lifeline to you lies forever within the mines of my soul

I'm not talking reunion
For the love of God let that one die
We tore up our love years ago
And found somebody new in our lives
But our years together made me the woman I am
And acting like that never happened is more than my heart can stand

I never dreamed I could be so far on the outside with you
Out past the reach of the heart and the soul, out where all hope is all through
The next stranger you meet'll have more of a chance than I do
I never dreamed I could be so far on the outside with you
