The Writing On The Wall

This song feels part Prine, part country story song, but with a perspective I don't often hear.

The kid in the first verse was five when I worked at an inner city day care center in Chicago. The day care was on the first floor, a work - release program for ex-cons was on the second, and when the alarm sounded we all ran out into the hall to find ex-cons, armed guards, and little James bawling to beat the band with his hand still on the fire alram lever, wailing "I didn't do it! I didn't do it!"

3/9/05

The writing on the wall...
We found James out in the hallway
A torrent of tears streaming down his face
That boy was still standing holding up his arm
To where he'd pulled the fire alarm
And "I didn't do it, I didn't do it
I didn't do it" was all he could say

The writing on the wall...
She said "I'll write to you every day
No need to fear my going away"
But day by day she outgrew his love
How do you write letters to a boy you don't think of?
And "I can't do it, I can't do it
I can't do it" was all she could say

Sometimes reality
And what we want to believe
Turn out to be
Not the same thing at all
Who can blame those foolish hopes
Try it out - see if it floats
Pretty soon we come to read
The writing on the wall

The writing on the wall...
They seemed like nice folks across the hall
Funny their girl never smiled at all
He'd never call the cops in a million years
Then he saw her bruises as she ran down the stairs
And "I never knew it, I neve knew it
I never knew it", he went and made the call

And how I wish right now that I could
Gather all my loved ones around
And somehow make it up to them
For all the times
I let 'em down

Sometimes reality
And what we want to believe
Turn out to be
Not the same thing at all
Who can blame those foolish hopes
Try it out - see if it floats
Pretty soon we come to read
The writing on the wall

Soon enough we come to read
The writing on the wall
